My approach to art is philosophical rather than cerebral. I consider it a process of transformation. An image exists within me which must be expressed. I allow an opening through which the image may move from my soul to my mind for expression. The process of making the image can often be painful, like pulling thorns, as I pace back and forth like a caged animal until the opening occurs. In development, the art goes through considerable changes. Technical skill has never been important to me. Although I put myself through the same rigors of academic study as any art student, I did it on my own. I am entirely self-taught. In my journey through expressionism and traditionalism, I began to define my artistic style and philosophy. I have chosen primarily abstract expression because I believe it allows the individual viewers to reach inside themselves for their own inner response to the work. It affords me the opportunity to create an emotional response without being specific. Much like a philosophy should be absorbed as a purpose then used as a means to understand, I try to affect the viewer both visually and viscerally. I avoid the common practice of assembling images in an organized conveinent way so that the "look" of the painting is neatly packaged for mass consumption. I loathe the idea of lowered expectations both artistically and personally. -------------------------------------------------------------- I paint because I want to, but more than the end result of my work, it is the transformation that occurs through the process of painting and viewing the work which I enjoy. I was born in New Jersey back in 1964 and grew up in a place called Tenafly. A small town that was more like a wiegh station for people that worked in New York, full of gangsters and business execs, singing stars and TV personalities . At the present time I live in Los Angeles with my son Kristafer, being a single father and working artist has its merits as well as its limitations. -------------------------------------------------------------- |
